Women, Wine & Waders

CfR Fish PicFly fishing and breast cancer? They go together like "rama lama ding dong." How, you ask?

The rhythmic motion of fly casting can be good therapy for the arm and upper body following radiation or a mastectomy. Not only can fly fishing be beneficial for physical health, but studies show that it can also positively impact mental health. In order to engage in the sport, one must be in the great outdoors surrounded by the calming effects of nature. And according to a 2010 Harvard Health Publications article, "spending time outdoors seems to have discernible benefits for physical and mental health."

Casting for Recovery (CfR) is a national organization whose mission is "to enhance the quality of life of women with breast cancer through a unique program that combines breast cancer education and peer support with the therapeutic sport of fly fishing." The organization's many retreats offer the opportunity for breast cancer survivors to be inspired, re-energized, supported and encouraged, all whilst being surrounded by the great outdoors. Any woman who is a breast cancer survivor, regardless of age or what stage of treatment or recovery she is in, may attend. The retreats are free to participants.
