Hope Floats

Cancer is difficult enough without facing it alone. We at Hope Cancer Resources understand the great importance of support for survivors and their co-survivors.

Hope Floats Group PicThis spring, in collaboration with The Buddy Project, we grew our support services by offering an art group for survivors entitled "Art, Healing & Hope." Each member created a collage of their personal "cancer story" or "life journey," as one member so eloquently phrased it.

The 6-week long group was a huge success. Members reported multiple benefits including recognizing thoughts and feelings related to their diagnoses and receiving support from new friends who have a deeper understanding of challenges faced and victories worth celebrating.

As the group came to a close, one member suggested that everyone get together again in the summer. With members anxious to reunite, a river float trip was organized shortly thereafter.

Group members and their co-survivors met at Spider Creek Resort and floated down the scenic White River in a convoy of canoes and kayaks. The weather was perfect and no one turned over, so it was deemed a success!

Once everyone disembarked from the river, the group shared packed lunches in a nearby park and then enjoyed a fiercely competitive game of Frisbee Kan Jam, which was a huge hit! There were photos, group selfies, hugs, smiles and a lot of laughter. The pictures taken are definitely worth a thousand words. We are already looking forward to the Second Annual Float for Hope in 2017!

If you or anyone you know would be interested in attending our "Art, Healing & Hope" group in the fall, please contact Miki Biggers, LCSW at 479-361-5847.
