Shine a Light on Lung Cancer
Join us as we shine a light on lung cancer Thursday,
November 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. Shine a Light takes place every November during
Lung Cancer Awareness Month and is the largest lung cancer awareness event in
the nation.
The majority of the public (three fourths of the
3,000 who participated in a Lung Cancer Project study) have a negative bias towards lung cancer
patients. The negativity largely comes from the stigma associated with this
particular cancer (that it’s a self-inflicted disease brought on by smoking),
and the low survival rates for those who are diagnosed (it’s the leading cause
of cancer death in both men and women – nearly a fourth of all cancer deaths are from lung cancer). Hope
Cancer Resources wants our community to view lung cancer in a different light –
one that doesn’t include guilt or a stigma.
We also want to spread the word about screening and early
detection. Less than 20 percent of lung cancer patients were diagnosed with the
disease when it’s at an early stage, when it’s easier to treat. This may be in
part due to the fact that early stage lung cancer often presents no symptoms.
However, a screening CT gives the best chance for early detection and only
lasts five minutes. The Center for Chest Care, located in the Highlands Oncology
Group office in Fayetteville, offers the NWA Lung Cancer Screening Program to
patients for free (there are some eligibility requirements). This program has
already led to an early stage diagnosis in several patients in our community.
Join us for this important lung cancer awareness event on
November 10. There is no cost to attend. You’ll hear about the latest treatments from a Northwest Arkansas
physician. You’ll hear from a lung cancer patient about her personal journey and meet other survivors. You can help us shine a light.
