June News

There are currently more than 15.5 million cancer survivors in the United States. A survivor is someone who was diagnosed with cancer, from the time of diagnosis through the rest of his or her life. No matter where in their journey a cancer patient might be, Hope Cancer Resources is there to meet them. Our team is here to provide support in their journey

Often times people think that once treatment ends, life goes back to the way it was before their diagnosis. However, this is usually not the case. The end of treatment can be an exciting and celebratory time, but it can also cause anxiety and uncertainty. Patients are suddenly faced with the reality of life after cancer, often referred to as their “new normal,” and that can be unsettling.

Recognizing that you may not be able to do all the things you did before cancer and its treatments is one of the first steps in adjusting to life after cancer. “Instead of constantly thinking about what life was like before your diagnosis of cancer, focus your energy on the present day” (Mayo Clinic).

One of our Hope Cancer Resources team members, who is also a cancer survivor, hadn’t welcomed her new normal until she joined one of our support groups, Art, Healing & Hope: Collaging Your Story.  “Since my diagnosis, trying to be stronger, I was always trying to get back to my old self. One of the things I learned in the collage group was that I have to accept the new me, and that that’s not a bad thing.” – Michelle Hobbs, Hope Cancer Resources Transportation Coordinator

This past Sunday, June 4, people around the world celebrated the 30th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day. Our team wore lavender to represent the color of all cancers and to join in the celebration of life that the special day represents. We are here to offer hope and support to anyone who has been touched by cancer. We are here to help survivors from the moment of diagnosis throughout the rest of their journey.
