Cancer and its treatments can affect people emotionally
as much as it can physically. Mindfulness is a technique that can help with the
emotional impact of cancer.
Mindfulness is the mental act of being aware of and in
tune with your present state of being. Several studies “provide reasonably
strong evidence supporting the use of mindfulness meditation and related
practices for cancer patients/survivors” (Cancer Network).
"I have often said the phrase 'be mindful of this' without
really thinking about the actual process. This a very good description of
mindfulness by Christine Fowle: 'Mindfulness is the process by which momentary
engagement is developed. It is not a technique to bestow rapture or bliss, but
rather a method of discovering peace.' Mindfulness can aid cancer
survivors in establishing their 'new normal' after enduring the treatment process,'" Sandy Prince, MS, CHES, Vice President of Cancer Prevention & Education.
There are many different practices that can help you
become more mindful, one of which is yoga. Hope Cancer
Resources offers free yoga classes to cancer survivors and caregivers
through our Wellness Center for Hope. The photo to the right was taken during one of those classes.
Learning how to be mindful can be extremely beneficial to
cancer survivors. If you are interested in yoga or other methods of
mindfulness, please contact Sandy Prince at 479-361-5847 or sandy.prince@hopecancerresources.org.
