On National Cancer Survivors Day in June 2014, local
breast cancer survivor Shonna Secrest created a cancer support group for
associates at Walmart. Read her inspirational story here. The group meets
monthly to provide support, education and resources to survivors and
co-survivors.
During group meetings, social workers and local cancer
specialists including oncologists, nurses, dietitians, physical therapists and
trainers speak on topics such as medical treatment options, navigating the
medical system, nutrition and exercise, mindfulness, lymphedema and the
emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis. The group provides a safe place for
survivors and co-survivors to express their thoughts and feelings and receive
support from others who have a personal understanding.
Miki Biggers, LCSW, OSW-C, Hope Cancer Resources Director
of Social Work Services, co-facilitates the group and is on hand to educate
members about resources available through Hope Cancer Resources and other
agencies in the community.
"I am proud that Hope Cancer Resources has the
opportunity to partner with Walmart to provide this supportive service to its
employees,” Miki said. “I enjoy working with employees who are survivors and
co-survivors as they can quickly connect with new members who are looking for
support from others who understand what it is to cope with cancer while also
continuing to work."
Walmart offers this group to associates as a benefit;
associates can remain on the clock during the group. If you would like to join,
meetings are located in the Walton Life Fitness Center at 1701 SE 14th St. in
Bentonville. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 4-5:30
p.m.
