Hope Cancer Resources is pleased to partner with First
Descents to bring an exciting program for young adult cancer survivors to
Northwest Arkansas.
First Descents is a nonprofit organization that provides
outdoor excursions for young adults impacted by cancer. These retreats give
survivors an opportunity to participate in outdoor adventures such as surfing,
kayaking and rock climbing.
Hope Cancer Resources and First Descents are offering a
free rock climbing weekend retreat in the Ozarks for survivors between 18 and
39. From Nov. 9-11, survivors will have the opportunity to rock climb, hike and
connect with other survivors at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch in Jasper.
“The amount of inspiration you get from the group of
survivors you are with is something out of a movie,” a First Descents alum
said. “There is so much passion and determination in such a small group of
people that became some of my closest friends, and the memories I made with
them will inspire and motivate me for the rest of my life.”
This retreat includes meals, lodging and
transportation at no cost. Young adult survivors of any skill level will
experience an empowering weekend outdoors without having to travel far away
from home.
“There are very few programs in our region geared
specifically toward adolescent and young adult cancer survivors,” Miki Biggers,
LCSW, OSW-C, Hope Cancer Resources Director of Social Work Services said.
“These survivors often experience a unique set of issues after diagnosis and
treatment. This retreat will offer the opportunity to connect, learn something
new (that may be out of your comfort zone), share experiences (if you want),
and receive support – all in the company of other survivors who ‘get it.’”
