Cancer & Fatigue Article Banner_opt.jpg

Cancer and its treatments can cause fatigue. In fact, according to the National Cancer Institute, “fatigue is the most common side effect of cancer treatment.” Fortunately, there are methods that can help to regain energy.

It may sound exhausting to someone with fatigue, but exercise is actually one of the most effective ways to counteract cancer-related fatigue. Research shows cancer patients who exercise on a regular basis have 40-50% less fatigue (National Comprehensive Cancer Network). Our Wellness Specialist Hannah Waggener, CPT can create an exercise plan for you and meet with you in one-on-one personal training sessions.

Eat a Healthy Diet
Eating a nutritious diet can help patients regain energy. If you are experiencing side effects that make eating difficult such as nausea and vomiting, ask your doctor for a referral to a registered dietitian. He or she can create a personalized diet plan for you to help ensure you’re getting enough calories and nutrients.

Relax
Take short naps when you’re feeling the most fatigued and make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night.

Cancer-related fatigue can be hard to deal with, but it’s not impossible. If you’re a patient or survivor trying to cope with fatigue, contact Hannah at hannah.waggener@hopecancerresources.org or 479-361-5847 to schedule a personal wellness consultation.
