Cancer and its treatments can cause physical changes to
the body that can negatively affect self-image. It’s not uncommon for cancer
patients to feel self-conscious about any physical changes they may experience
during or after treatment.
Some physical changes caused by cancer and its treatments
can include:
- Blotchy skin and/or rashes
- The need for an ostomy
- Hair loss
- Loss of a limb or breast
- Scars from surgery
- Swelling
- Weight gain or loss
One of the best ways to cope with any self-image issues
during or after cancer is to speak with a licensed therapist. Hope Cancer
Resources has 10 social workers on staff who meet with patients and survivors
about any issues related to their diagnosis at no cost.
Hannah Waggener, CPT, CES, our Wellness Specialist, can
also help you cope with physical changes. She can create an exercise plan for
you and meet with you in one-on-one training sessions to help you meet your
fitness-related goals.
If you are trying to cope with any self-image issues
